Messi, Mbappé and Cabo Verde’s Vozinha lead World Cup 2026 social media buzz

A study by the content‑strategy firm Content CO tracked digital conversation during the first week of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The five largest spikes were generated by the opening match (Mexico vs South Africa), Lionel Messi’s hat‑trick against Algeria, goalkeeper Vozinha of Cabo Verde’s saves versus Spain, Kylian Mbappé’s goals versus Senegal and the Japan vs Netherlands encounter.

Brazil generated 7.5% of all tournament mentions – the second‑largest share after the United States – but its national team ranked fifth among the 32 squads with about 574,000 citations and posted the fourth‑highest proportion of negative mentions. Neymar was the most‑mentioned Brazilian player despite not taking the field.
