Messina City Council Faces Municipal Workers Salary Dispute and Potential Strike

A dispute over the accessory salary for Messina municipal employees has escalated into a labour conflict. The local movement “Partiamo da qui”, led by coordinator Franco Tiano, demanded the administration clarify the “technical, accounting and control” reasons behind the delayed payment of contractually agreed sums, asking whether formal objections from the city’s accounting office exist.

The municipal unions CGIL, UIL, CSA and SIL have announced a strike for 31 July 2026. However, the CISL federation in Messina will not join the action, stating it will await a decision from the Labour Court on a legal challenge it filed against the city’s unilateral amendment of the Collective Decentralised Integrated Contract. The court’s ruling will determine whether further strike actions are justified.

Both parties accuse the other of overstepping legal bounds, with the municipality citing fiscal prudence amid a financial re‑balancing plan, while the unions claim the amendment breaches signed agreements and workers’ rights.
