Crotone and Messina officials propose surveillance to combat urban waste

In Crotone, local officials and the Third Council Commission are taking action against illegal waste dumping. Councilman Giovanni Russo has proposed installing municipal surveillance cameras to identify those responsible for abandoning trash in areas such as via Acquabona and Trafinello. The proposal includes reporting offenders to the Public Prosecutor for environmental damage and potentially suspending the licenses of involved commercial activities.

The Third Commission, led by Giuseppe Castagnino, unanimously approved requests for both video surveillance and the creation of a new public square to replace current waste accumulation sites between via Acquabona and via del Gesù. This initiative aims to transform degraded areas into usable public spaces.

In Messina, councilman Alessandro Cacciotto has criticized the municipal administration for the ongoing neglect of the Monumental Cemetery and the adjacent via San Cosimo. He reported persistent issues with illegal waste, unmaintained vegetation, and damaged road surfaces, calling for permanent maintenance and surveillance rather than temporary, ‘spot’ cleaning operations.
