Messina municipal infrastructure and maintenance issues

In Messina, the municipal administration has taken steps to restructure urban maintenance services. Following Giunta decree No. 523 on 6 August 2026, the city suspended a road-maintenance contract with Amam, redirecting the company to focus exclusively on water and sewage services. This decision, supported by Councilor Libero Giovani, aims to reallocate approximately €22.6 million in funds toward other municipal needs while shifting ordinary road work responsibilities to the city’s Department of Maintenance.

Despite these administrative changes, local officials continue to raise concerns regarding infrastructure and urban decay. Councilor Alessandro Cacciotto has criticized the administration for the neglect of the Monumental Cemetery and Via San Cosimo, alleging that the city relies on ‘spot operations’—temporary cleanups performed around religious holidays—rather than consistent year-round maintenance. Reported issues in these areas include illegal waste dumping, unmanaged vegetation, and deteriorating road surfaces marked by cracks and potholes.

As of late August 2026, Cacciotto has intensified his calls for the administration to implement permanent maintenance and surveillance measures to address these persistent issues of illegal waste and environmental neglect.
