Messina Deploys Urban Digital Twin Platform for Real‑Time City Management
The municipality of Messina has launched an Urban Digital Twin platform, a three‑dimensional replica of the city's 214 km² territory that integrates data from more than 40,000 sensors. Funded under the PN Metro Plus 2021‑2027 programme, the system collects traffic, flood, air‑quality and energy information in a single data lake and uses multi‑agent artificial‑intelligence models to produce predictive simulations up to 72 hours ahead.
Maurizio Mondello, Messina's head of digital transition, presented the platform during a meeting with the Consulta Smart City Roma, emphasizing its ability to monitor conditions in real time, forecast critical events and enable precise interventions by civil‑protection, public works and municipal police. The project is supported by the University of Messina, represented by Professor Massimo Villari, which contributes scientific expertise to the system's modelling capabilities.
