Messina Urban Digital Twin rollout

Overview

In late July 2026 the municipality of Messina launched an Urban Digital Twin platform that creates a three‑dimensional replica of the city’s 214 km² area. The system integrates data from over 40,000 sensors covering traffic, flood risk, air quality and energy use, and stores it in a unified data lake.

A public demonstration on 27 July, attended by Mayor Federico Basile, officials from the Smart City Rome consultancy, the city’s digital transition office and the University of Messina, showcased the platform’s predictive capabilities. Powered by cloud, edge and IoT infrastructure, multi‑agent AI models generate forecasts for up to 72 hours, supporting civil‑protection, public works and municipal police with scenario‑based decision‑making.

The project is funded by the PN Metro Plus 2021‑2027 programme and involves close collaboration with the University of Messina, which provides scientific expertise for the modelling framework.
