Messina facility for psychiatric disabilities seized over health violations

Authorities in Messina have seized a residential community for people with psychiatric disabilities following an inspection by the NAS of Catania and the NIL of Messina. The investigation revealed severe sanitary deficiencies, the use of unqualified auxiliary operators, an unauthorized number of residents, and the presence of undocumented workers.

During the inspection, officials discovered over 230 packs of expired medication, posing a significant risk to the health of the residents. The facility, valued at approximately 3 million euros, has been placed under preventive seizure.

Thirty-seven residents were relocated to suitable facilities with the assistance of social workers from the Municipality of Messina and the Messina North District Social Service. The legal representative of the managing association faces charges including maltreatment, abandonment of minors or incapacitated persons, administration of spoiled drugs, and failure to comply with workplace safety requirements.
