Care facility violations in Messina

Authorities in the province of Messina have conducted inspections of residential care facilities, resulting in seizures and closures due to severe health, safety, and management violations.

In August, a residential community for individuals with psychiatric disabilities was seized after inspectors discovered sanitary deficiencies, the use of unqualified staff, undocumented workers, and over 230 packs of expired medication. The facility's legal representative faced charges including maltreatment and the administration of spoiled drugs, while 37 residents were relocated.

In September, two additional elderly care facilities on the Tyrrhenian coast managed by the same company were closed following inspections by the NAS Carabinieri. These investigations revealed cockroach infestations, contaminated linens, poorly preserved food, and safety hazards such as exposed electrical cables and broken elevators. The company's administrator was reported for crimes including the abandonment of incapable persons, and 36 residents were relocated from the structures.
