Messina health authority inaugurates two community hospitals and three care hubs

The Provincial Health Authority of Messina opened two new community hospitals and three community‑care hubs in the Cittadella Sanitaria area. Each hospital occupies about 3,000 m², provides 20 beds for short‑stay patients and was built to meet anti‑seismic, fire‑safety, hygiene and accessibility standards. The three hubs – one co‑located with the hospitals, one on Via del Vespro and one in the Pistunina district – bring the province’s total to 16 community houses (four hubs and twelve “spoke” sites).

The ceremony was attended by the ASP strategic directors, regional assessor for social policies Alessandra Calafiore, several regional and national deputies, and representatives of civil, religious and military officials. The projects are funded by the EU‑backed PNRR Mission 6 Health and were completed ahead of contractual deadlines. With these openings, four of the six planned community hospitals are now operational, while the remaining two (in Sant’Agata di Militello and Taormina) are scheduled for inauguration later this year. The hubs deliver multidisciplinary services – general practitioners, paediatricians, specialists, community nurses, psychologists and social workers – aimed at easing pressure on emergency departments and providing nearer‑to‑home care.

The ASP highlighted that the new facilities reflect years of coordinated planning and technical work, and are intended to strengthen a patient‑centred, accessible health system across the Messina province.
