Messina launches city‑wide Digital Twin platform at live demo

The municipality of Messina held a public event on 27 July 2026 at Palazzo Zanca to present its Digital Twin platform. Mayor Federico Basile opened the session, followed by speakers from the Smart City Rome consultancy, the city’s digital transition office, and the University of Messina. A live demonstration showed the 3‑D replica of the city and the system’s predictive features.

The platform maps the entire 214 km² municipal area in three dimensions and integrates data from more than 40,000 sensors across the city. Powered by cloud, edge and IoT technologies and artificial‑intelligence models validated with the university, it can generate forecasts for floods, storm surges, traffic, air quality and energy use up to 24‑72 hours ahead. Funded by the PN Metro Plus 2021‑2027 program, the system aims to move municipal management from real‑time monitoring to scenario‑based decision support.
