Messina Metropolitan Council election candidates confirmed for July 27 vote

The renewal of the Messina Metropolitan Council will be decided on Sunday, 27 July. Only the mayors and councilors of the 108 municipalities in the province – a total of 1,272 eligible voters – can cast ballots in this second‑level election.

Six electoral lists have filed candidates: Forza Azzurra for Città Metropolitana Messina, Grande Sicilia, Sud Chiama Nord, Fratelli d’Italia (Giorgia Meloni), Lega (Salvini) and Partito Democratico. The lists together include more than 60 candidates whose names have been published. The electoral office, overseen by Andreina Mazzù and municipal officials, has completed the verification of documents and will hold a public draw to determine the order of symbols on the ballot.

Votes are weighted: “the ‘weight’ of the preference expressed by each administrator varies based on the demographic segment of the population they represent.” The newly elected council will guide strategic areas such as territorial planning, road networks, school infrastructure and local economic development.
