Messina municipal election 2026 records higher voter numbers despite lower turnout rate

On May 24, 2026, Messina held the first day of its municipal elections. By 23:00 the city reported 87,598 voters, representing 46.46% of the 188,540 eligible voters. Polls will reopen the next morning (07:00‑15:00) before counting begins for the mayor, city council and district councils. If no mayoral candidate reaches an absolute majority, a runoff is scheduled for June 7‑8.

Compared with the 2022 municipal vote, the 2026 election attracted about 10,000 more voters – a 5% increase in absolute numbers – even though the percentage of turnout fell from 55.64% in 2022 to 46.46% in 2026. The rise occurs amid a long‑term decline in the eligible electorate, which fell from 192,072 in 2022 to 188,540 in 2026. The city also provided on‑site services for renewing electoral cards and identity documents during voting hours.
