Italy's Guardia di Finanza marks 252nd anniversary; municipal police swears in new agents

The Guardia di Finanza celebrated its 252nd anniversary across Sicily, holding ceremonies in Messina, Siracusa and Agrigento. The events highlighted the force’s recent operations, including investigations that led to the seizure of more than €560 million in fictitious Superbonus tax credits, €12 million from fiscal fraud cases, and numerous other asset confiscations. Over the past 18 months the Corps reported 988 judicial investigations, 130 total tax evaders and 1,790 illegal workers, underscoring its role in combating economic crime.

Meanwhile, municipal police forces in Messina and Napoli conducted oath‑taking ceremonies for new officers. In Messina, 22 recruits (2 permanent, 20 temporary) were sworn in before Mayor Federico Basile, who stressed the strengthening of local security. In Napoli, 20 recently stabilised agents received their weapons, and 97 new recruits joined the force as part of a broader plan to expand municipal policing in the city.

Both sets of events reflect ongoing efforts by Italian law‑enforcement agencies to reinforce public safety and address financial and organized‑crime threats.
