Messenia criminal group dismantled for 381,000 euro fraud and theft

Greek police have dismantled a criminal organization operating in the Messenia region, accusing nine individuals aged 21 to 33 of fraud, theft, forgery, and radio frequency law violations. The group is estimated to have gained over 381,475 euros and 4,600 Canadian dollars through their activities between March and July 2026.

The group utilized a specific methodology to target victims, primarily the elderly. Members would contact individuals by phone, impersonating employees of the electricity distribution company DEDDIE. They claimed there was a technical fault or an imminent risk of an explosion to manipulate victims into handing over cash, jewelry, and other valuables.

In addition to telephone scams, the group carried out at least five residential thefts and four attempted thefts. To evade detection, members used wireless transceivers for communication, wore disguises, and used various vehicles with altered license plates. Police investigations led to the seizure of jewelry, mobile phones, and three vehicles used in the commission of the crimes.
