Meta launches Muse Spark Open AI model optimized for Apple Mac Studio

Meta has released Muse Spark Open, an open-weight AI model featuring 816 billion total parameters and a one-million-token context window. Designed for complex software engineering, coding, and agentic tasks, the model utilizes a mixture-of-experts architecture that activates 42 billion parameters per inference to maintain efficiency.

In a notable collaboration with Apple, the model is optimized to run locally on high-performance hardware. Specifically, it can be deployed on Mac Studio computers equipped with M5 Ultra chips. By connecting two Mac Studios, users can leverage up to 1 TB of unified memory to run the model as a single system. This local execution is supported by Apple’s MLX framework.

While the model is available for download on platforms like Hugging Face, its deployment requires significant hardware resources. Meta also offers access to its models through various API and cloud services, including Amazon SageMaker, Google Cloud Model Garden, and Microsoft Foundry. The release marks a strategic move by Meta to compete in the frontier AI market alongside companies like OpenAI and Anthropic.
