Meta and Microsoft advance autonomous AI agent capabilities
Major technology companies Meta and Microsoft are advancing the development of autonomous AI agents capable of performing complex digital tasks independently.
Meta has introduced Muse, an AI agent designed to operate via its own browser to handle tasks such as shopping, booking appointments, negotiating with customer service, and managing communications. While millions of users have reportedly downloaded the application, experts warn of potential systemic risks. These include the ability of AI agents to overwhelm digital infrastructures through high-frequency requests and the potential for agents to monopolize limited resources like concert tickets or restaurant reservations.
Microsoft has updated its Copilot assistant to allow for autonomous interaction with desktop applications. The update introduces a new structure featuring “Autopilot” for autonomous agents, “Code” for application creation, and “Home” for standard chat functions. Microsoft is also testing a “Copilot Managed Runtime” to allow AI-generated applications to run within secure corporate environments. Additionally, Microsoft is transitioning to a usage-based billing model for these new services, moving away from fixed monthly fees.
