Meta and Snap face landmark trial over social media harms
Jury selection is set to begin in Los Angeles for a major trial involving Meta and Snap, marking the first time Snap will defend itself in a case regarding the alleged harms of social media on young users. The litigation centers on claims that platforms were intentionally designed to be addictive, contributing to mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and eating disorders among children and teenagers.
A California state judge has consolidated multiple cases into this single trial. While TikTok and YouTube reached settlements with certain plaintiffs before the trial's start, Meta has settled with one plaintiff (SJ) but continues to face claims from another (KDB). If no further settlements are reached, opening statements are scheduled for November 4.
Key witnesses expected to testify include Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Instagram chief Adam Mosseri, and Snap CEO Evan Spiegel. This trial follows a previous bellwether case in Los Angeles where a jury found Meta and YouTube liable for harming a user, resulting in a $6 million penalty. Additionally, Meta faces significant legal challenges in New Mexico, including a recent $25 billion penalty related to consumer deception regarding data privacy.
