US social media addiction suits intensify, Meta pressured
Entities: Facebook · Instagram · Kentucky school district · U.S. State Attorneys General · Meta Platforms Inc.
Overview
The teen‑addiction litigation that began with the Breathitt County case in May 2026 has expanded into a national wave of suits targeting Meta, Snap, TikTok and YouTube. Meta settled with Kentucky for $27 million, while YouTube resolved two Florida autoplay cases in June. A California multidistrict action now targets Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat and TikTok, and a 29‑state COPPA suit accuses Meta of violating child‑privacy rules; a judge denied Meta’s motion to dismiss and set trial for 18 August in Oakland. On 7 July, California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey filed a joint civil suit seeking $1.4 trillion from Meta for deliberately engineering addictive experiences for children, following a New Mexico jury verdict that awarded $375 million in a similar claim. Meta responded with a $50 billion, 5‑GW Hyperion data‑center expansion in Louisiana and plans to launch its Iris AI chip later in 2026; its stock rose 7 % in early July.
On 22 July, a 15‑year‑old Florida teen withdrew his lawsuit against Meta shortly before a bellwether trial in Los Angeles, leaving Meta as the sole remaining defendant in that pilot case. The withdrawal was described as a partial victory for Meta amid more than 3,000 similar lawsuits nationwide. Earlier rulings have already ordered Meta to pay $6 million in damages in a March Los Angeles trial and $375 million in penalties in New Mexico.
By 28 July, Meta continued to confront the litigation wave, facing claims that could total up to $1.4 trillion. The company said it would contest unfounded claims while maintaining heavy AI‑investment spending, even as user growth stalls and the broader social‑media market slows.
