Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri testified in a federal court in Oakland, California, during a landmark trial involving Meta. A coalition of 29 US states is suing Meta, alleging the company intentionally designed Facebook and Instagram to be addictive to children and teenagers, contributing to mental health crises including anxiety, depression, and suicide.

During questioning, Mosseri addressed the effectiveness of the 'Take a Break' feature, a tool designed to encourage users to step away from the app. Internal documents presented by prosecutors revealed that at one point, only 1.8% of teenagers actually used the feature. Mosseri acknowledged the low adoption rate but argued that the company has since made the feature a default setting for teen accounts as of late 2024.

The lawsuit also alleges that Meta violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by collecting personal data from users under the age of 13 without parental consent. Prosecutors are seeking approximately $200 billion in financial penalties and are pushing for structural changes to how the platforms are designed to protect young users.
