Meta invests $900 million in Indian fintech CRED as founder Kunal Shah moves to Meta

Meta announced a $900 million investment in Bengaluru‑based fintech CRED, valuing the company at about $4.5 billion post‑money. The funding round combines roughly $500 million of primary capital for the startup and $400 million of secondary share sales, allowing early investors to partially exit. As part of the deal, CRED’s founder and CEO Kunal Shah is transitioning to a global leadership role at Meta‑owned WhatsApp, while chief strategy and finance officer Miten Sampat assumes interim CEO duties. The transaction, the largest Indian startup round of the year, is expected to trigger a major employee liquidity event, enabling many staff members to monetize their holdings. Meta’s stake gives it a foothold in India’s burgeoning digital payments and commerce ecosystem, aligning with WhatsApp’s deeper push into financial services.
