Meta issues first settlement payment to South Dakota
South Dakota has received its first $9 million installment from Meta Platforms, Inc. as part of a $52 million settlement involving 42 states. The funds are being directed to the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Fund, pending allocation decisions by the State Legislature.
The settlement stems from a 2023 lawsuit filed by various Attorneys General alleging that Meta designed Facebook and Instagram with addictive features that knowingly exposed young users to mental health harms. Over the next 10 years, South Dakota’s total share of the settlement could exceed $73 million depending on specific conditions.
In addition to financial compensation, the agreement requires Meta to implement new safety features on its platforms to improve online security for children.
