Meta settles US school district lawsuit over child social‑media addiction

Meta reached an out‑of‑court settlement with the Breathitt County School District in Kentucky, ending a lawsuit that alleged Instagram, Facebook and other platforms fueled mental‑health problems and addiction among students. The financial terms were not disclosed, but Bloomberg estimates that total payouts across similar cases could approach $400 billion. The agreement follows comparable settlements by Snap, TikTok and YouTube and comes shortly before a federal trial scheduled for June 12 in Oakland, California.

More than 1,200 other U.S. school districts continue legal actions against major social‑media firms, accusing them of increasing anxiety, depression and learning disruptions. Meta has stressed that the matter was resolved amicably and highlighted ongoing safety tools such as Instagram’s “Teen Accounts” and parental controls. The settlement is part of a broader legal landscape that includes a $6 million verdict against Meta and Google in Los Angeles, a $375 million penalty in New Mexico, and an upcoming multi‑state trial slated for August 2026 that could further shape platform design and child‑protection policies.
