Metaplanet transfers thousands of Bitcoin to Coinbase Prime
Metaplanet, the Tokyo-listed company pursuing a Bitcoin treasury strategy, has transferred approximately 4,750 BTC, valued at roughly $374 million, to Coinbase Prime over a period in late August. These movements included a 3,000 BTC deposit on August 29 and a 2,400 BTC transfer on August 31.
While large transfers to institutional platforms often trigger market speculation regarding potential sell-offs, CEO Simon Gerovich has characterized these actions as routine custodial operations. He stated there is no intention to liquidate the company’s position, noting that Coinbase Prime provides services including regulated custody, liquidity management, and over-the-counter trading.
The company currently holds approximately 43,000 BTC, with an aggregate cost basis of roughly $96,191 per coin. Due to Bitcoin trading at levels significantly below this average purchase price, the company is currently facing substantial unrealized losses. Financial reports indicate Metaplanet has incurred over $45 million in treasury operating expenses, including interest on BTC-collateralized credit facilities.
