Metaplanet Bitcoin treasury transfers
Overview
Metaplanet, a Tokyo-listed company, has executed several large-scale transfers of its Bitcoin holdings to the Coinbase Prime custodial platform. Between August 25 and August 29, the company moved a total of approximately 5,400 BTC, valued at several hundred million dollars.
CEO Simon Gerovich addressed market speculation regarding these movements, stating that the transfers are “custodial in nature” and do not indicate an intention to liquidate holdings. He characterized the activity as “routine housekeeping and custodial shuffling rather than a sale.”
Recent activity in late August included a 3,000 BTC deposit on August 29 and a 2,400 BTC transfer on August 31, totaling approximately 4,750 BTC moved during that specific window. Metaplanet utilizes Coinbase Prime for regulated custody, liquidity management, and over-the-counter trading.
The company continues to follow a treasury strategy of accumulating Bitcoin, with total holdings reaching approximately 43,000 BTC. However, with an aggregate cost basis of roughly $96,191 per coin, the company is currently facing substantial unrealized losses as Bitcoin trades below that average. Financial reports also indicate Metaplanet has incurred over $45 million in treasury operating expenses, including interest on BTC-collateralized credit facilities.
