Meta's Muse AI agent hits top app rankings amid Amazon shopping block

Meta Platforms’ new AI agent, Muse, has achieved rapid consumer adoption, reaching the No. 1 spot in free app rankings on both the Apple App Store and Google Play in the United States. The tool, which can perform autonomous tasks such as booking appointments, managing emails, and shopping, has outpaced the initial download velocity of ChatGPT. This success has significantly boosted Meta’s stock, which saw an 11 percent jump, and fueled a broader rally in the technology and semiconductor sectors.

However, the rise of agentic AI has triggered a conflict with Amazon. The retail giant has blocked Muse from its platform, citing violations of terms of use. Amazon claims that Muse does not identify itself as an automated agent during shopping and expressed concerns that the tool could access or store sensitive customer login credentials. Meta has denied these security concerns, stating that Muse operates within secure environments and has no visibility into user passwords or payment methods, using services like Stripe for secure transactions.

While Amazon has taken a restrictive stance, other companies like Shopify are embracing the technology by integrating their services with AI agents. Meanwhile, financial institutions including Bank of America and NatWest have warned that the rapid advancement of AI shopping bots could increase risks related to fraud, scams, and data privacy if industry standards and consumer protections do not keep pace.
