Meteor showers to illuminate the night sky in October 2026

October 2026 features several significant astronomical events, including the Draconid and Orionid meteor showers. The Draconid meteor shower, caused by Earth passing through the debris of comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner, is active from October 6 to 10, with peak activity expected on October 8 and 9. Unlike many other showers, the Draconids are best viewed shortly after sunset because their radiant point in the Draco constellation is highest in the sky early in the night.

Following the Draconids, the Orionid meteor shower will provide further viewing opportunities. The Orionids are produced by particles left behind by Halley's Comet and are known for their high speed, entering Earth's atmosphere at approximately 66 kilometers per second. These meteors typically peak in mid-October.

For optimal viewing, observers are advised to find locations with minimal light pollution and clear horizons. While telescopes or binoculars are not required as the meteors are visible to the naked eye, conditions such as moon phase and sky clarity will influence the frequency of visible meteors.
