Methoni Castle to receive 1.7 million euro restoration project
The Greek Ministry of Culture is launching a 1.7 million euro project to provide coastal protection for the western sea wall of Methoni Castle. This fortification is considered one of the most significant defensive complexes in Greece.
The project aims to restore and highlight the western wall, which dates back to the 13th century with subsequent repairs from the 15th century onwards. The site has suffered significant damage due to continuous wave action, erosion, stone weathering, and structural collapses. Some damage is also attributed to bombings during World War II and heavy rainfall.
The initiative follows a 2021 agreement between the Ministry of Culture, the Peloponnese Region, and the Municipality of Pylos-Nestor. The work will be carried out by the Directorate of Restoration of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments, with special emphasis on protecting the natural environment within the Natura 2000 protected area.
