Peloponnese historical site preservation projects

Overview

Efforts to preserve and enhance historical fortifications in the Peloponnese region of Greece have progressed through new funding and restoration initiatives.

In September 2026, the Peloponnese Region announced a 1.3 million euro project for Acrocorinth Castle. Part of the Peloponnese Regional Development Program 2026–2030, the initiative focuses on the design and installation of a modern architectural lighting system to highlight the monument’s historical features while minimizing light pollution and protecting the local environment.

Following this, the Greek Ministry of Culture launched a 1.7 million euro project for Methoni Castle in October 2026. This project aims to provide coastal protection for the castle’s 13th-century western sea wall, which has faced structural damage from erosion, wave action, and historical bombings. The work is being conducted with an emphasis on protecting the surrounding Natura 2000 protected area.
