METLEN achieves first fire on waste at Protos ERF plant in UK

METLEN has successfully completed the ‘first fire on waste’ at the Protos Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) in Cheshire, United Kingdom. This milestone indicates that the plant has entered the final stages of hot commissioning.

Developed for Encyclis in partnership with Standardkessel Baumgarte GmbH, the facility is designed to process 500,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste annually. Once fully operational, it will generate up to 49.9MW of baseload electricity, which is sufficient to power approximately 90,000 homes.

The project aims to support the circular economy by recovering resources from residual household and commercial waste. Beyond electricity generation, the process converts bottom ash into secondary aggregates for construction and allows for the extraction of ferrous and non-ferrous metals for reuse.
