Metlen Protos energy recovery facility commissioning

Overview

Metlen has reached a significant milestone at the Protos Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) in Cheshire, United Kingdom, by achieving ‘first fire on waste’. This event marks the beginning of the final stages of hot commissioning for the plant.

Developed for Encyclis, the facility is designed to process 500,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste per year. Once fully operational, it is expected to generate up to 49.9MW of electricity, enough to power roughly 90,000 homes. The project supports the circular economy by extracting ferrous and non-ferrous metals and converting bottom ash into secondary aggregates for construction.

This project represents Metlen’s first venture into Waste-to-Energy. Its development involved overcoming various obstacles, including the energy crisis, inflation, and supply chain disruptions. The successful milestone also serves to validate Metlen’s strategic restructuring and the integration of its former M Renewables and M Power Projects divisions into the unified M RESET platform.
