Metlen achieves first waste combustion at Protos facility in the UK

Metlen has successfully achieved the ‘First Fire on Waste’ at the Protos Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) in Cheshire, United Kingdom. Developed for Encyclis, the plant is entering the final stages of hot commissioning.

Once fully operational, the facility will process 500,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste annually, generating up to 49.9MW of electricity. This output is sufficient to power approximately 90,000 households. The project supports the circular economy by recovering resources from residual waste, including the production of inert construction materials from ash and the extraction of ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

The project represents Metlen’s first Waste-to-Energy venture and faced significant challenges, including supply chain disruptions, inflation, and the energy crisis. The successful milestone validates the company’s strategic restructuring and the integration of its former M Renewables and M Power Projects divisions into the unified M RESET platform.
