New York City launches ‘Opera for All’ with 70,000 free Met tickets
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has launched ‘Opera for All,’ a long-term partnership with the Metropolitan Opera designed to increase cultural accessibility. The initiative will provide 70,000 free tickets to New York City residents during the 2026-2027 season, representing approximately 10% of the total available tickets.
Starting in September, 10,000 tickets will be released each month through a lottery system accessible via the Met’s website or mobile app. To be eligible, residents must live in New York City and must not have purchased a ticket to the Metropolitan Opera since 2019. Winners can receive up to six tickets per year, with a limit of two per performance. The free tickets will cover all seating sections except for standing room.
The program aims to reach diverse populations through support from public institutions, including schools, libraries, CUNY, and NYCHA. Planned productions for the upcoming season include ‘Macbeth,’ ‘Lincoln in the Bardo,’ and ‘La Bohème.’ The Metropolitan Opera has expressed commitment to continuing this program in future seasons to strengthen its role in the city's cultural life.
