NYC launches ‘Opera for All’ and child care initiatives
Overview
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has launched the ‘Opera for All’ program, a partnership with the Metropolitan Opera to distribute 70,000 free tickets during the 2026-2027 season. Representing approximately 10% of the season’s total capacity, the initiative utilizes a monthly lottery via the Met’s website or mobile app, releasing 10,000 tickets per month. To be eligible, residents must not have purchased a Met ticket since 2019. Winners can receive up to six tickets annually, with a limit of two per performance, covering all seating except standing room. The program aims to reach diverse populations through support from institutions such as NYCHA, CUNY, libraries, and schools.
The Metropolitan Opera noted that the program helps fill seats that might otherwise remain empty, as average paid attendance is currently 75%. This initiative coincides with the launch of ‘Make the Met Forever,’ a $1.5 billion fundraising campaign for the institution’s long-term stability.
Alongside these cultural efforts, the administration is implementing ‘The Little Apple,’ a universal child care pilot. The program provides free, year-round, full-day care for the children of city workers aged 6 weeks to 3 years, with additional services for children through kindergarten in high-need districts. The child care expansion has faced criticism from Bill Donohue of the Catholic League, who characterized the move as an attempt to ‘nationalize child-rearing.’
