Metrorex faces scrutiny over widespread nepotism in hiring

Investigations into Metrorex, the Bucharest subway operator, have revealed widespread nepotism within the company. At the central headquarters, out of approximately 350 employees, only 13 individuals reportedly have no familial ties to other staff members.

The scale of these connections became apparent during the formation of a negotiation committee for a new collective labor agreement, where management struggled to find members who were not related to one another. A union leader acknowledged that the profession is often passed down through generations, stating, “Each person raises a successor in their footsteps.”

Critics and journalists suggest that these practices extend across the entire company, which employs nearly 5,000 people. The prevalence of family ties is raising concerns regarding meritocracy, transparency, and the ability to manage internal conflicts or disciplinary actions objectively. Metrorex management has not yet provided an official response to these findings.
