Metrorex nepotism and labor negotiation delays
Overview
Negotiations for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CCM) at Metrorex, the Bucharest subway operator, have been delayed by administrative conflicts of interest. To ensure impartiality, a decision by the General Meeting of Shareholders prohibited members of the negotiating committee from having relatives employed by the company.
This requirement caused significant delays, as Marian Artimon, president of the Unitatea – Sindicatul Liber din Metrou, reported that it took four weeks to form a 13-person committee because only 13 employees at the headquarters lack relatives within the Metrorex system.
Subsequent investigations have highlighted widespread nepotism within the organization. Out of approximately 350 employees at the central headquarters, only 13 reportedly have no familial ties to other staff. Union leadership noted that the profession is often passed down through generations, stating, “Each person raises a successor in their footsteps.”
With nearly 5,000 total employees, critics and journalists have raised concerns regarding transparency, meritocracy, and the company’s ability to manage disciplinary actions objectively. Metrorex management has not yet issued an official response to these findings.
