Metrorex manages electricity debt amid government investigation
Metrorex is addressing an electricity debt crisis following notifications from its supplier, Hidroelectrica. While interim Transport Minister Radu Miruță reported that the company has not paid its monthly bills for three months and faces an outstanding debt of over 11 million lei, Metrorex clarified that it is making daily payments to reduce the balance. The company stated that its current debt is now less than the value of a single month's electricity consumption and emphasized that it is not currently facing disconnection from the grid.
In response to the financial situation, the interim Minister of Transport has expanded the mission of the Control Body to investigate Metrorex, citing concerns regarding the efficient use of funds. Metrorex consumes approximately 1 million euros worth of electricity per month.
Separately, Romania's energy landscape is seeing various developments, including the approval of a new market mechanism by ANRE that allows eligible consumers to be paid for voluntarily reducing electricity consumption.
