Polish citizen Bartłomiej Włodzimierz Krakowiak vandalised several Virgin Mary statues and set fire to the outdoor altar of the Church of St James at the Medjugorje pilgrimage site in Bosnia‑Herzegovina. He was taken into custody in Cerno near Ljubuški on Tuesday before 13:00.

The State Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia‑Herzegovina has asked a court to impose pre‑trial detention, citing a risk of flight and possible repeat offences. The hearing lasted about fifteen minutes; Krakowiak did not oppose the request. He faces charges of damaging religious objects, inciting national, racial and religious hatred, and endangering public order. Prosecutors say the detention could be extended until 28 August 2026, with a potential sentence of up to eight years in prison. Krakowiak has stated his motive was to expose what he believes are fraudulent apparitions in Medjugorje and says he did not intend to harm anyone.
