In the early hours of 28 July 2026, several Marian statues at the Medjugorje pilgrimage site in Bosnia‑Herzegovina were defaced with black spray‑paint and the phrase “Devil in a skirt”. A Polish‑language banner placed near the statues named the six alleged visionaries as fraudsters and read “I have evidence”. About half an hour later the outdoor altar of the parish church of St James was set alight, with security video showing a man pouring gasoline before igniting it.

Police detained a 31‑year‑old Polish suspect, identified as Bartłomiej Włodzimierz Krakowiak, who now faces charges under article 145 b that carry a penalty of six months to five years in prison. The parish office announced the shrine would remain open to pilgrims and cleaning work began immediately to restore the damaged areas. Bishop Petar Palić and MP Darijana Filipović condemned the attack as an assault on the Catholic community.

The vandalism occurred just days before the annual Mladifest international youth festival, scheduled for 1–6 August, which attracts tens of thousands of young pilgrims.
