Overview

In May 2024 two historic chapels at the UNESCO‑listed Kalwaria Zebrzydowska sanctuary in Poland were defaced with satanic‑style graffiti. No suspect has been identified.

On 28 July 2026 the outdoor altar of the Church of St James and two Virgin Mary statues at the Medjugorje pilgrimage site in Bosnia‑Herzegovina were vandalised with black spray‑paint and a banner accusing the six alleged visionaries of fraud. Security video showed a man pouring gasoline on the altar before igniting it; the fire was quickly extinguished.

Police detained 31‑year‑old Polish citizen Bartłomiej Włodzimierz Krakowiak, who admitted the act, saying it was meant to expose what he sees as a fraud. He now faces charges under article 145 b, carrying a penalty of six months to five years’ imprisonment. Bosnian prosecutors have asked a court to impose pre‑trial detention, citing flight‑risk and the possibility of repeat offences; detention could last until 28 August 2026.

The parish office announced that the shrine will remain open to pilgrims and that cleaning and restoration work has begun. Bishop Petar Palić, MP Darijana Filipović and other church leaders condemned the attack as an assault on the Catholic community, urging prayer and forgiveness ahead of the Mladifest youth festival scheduled for 1–6 August.
