Međugorje vandalism suspect faces requested detention extension

The Prosecutor's Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina has requested that the Court of BiH extend the detention of Polish citizen Bartłomiej Włodzimierz Krakowiak for an additional two months. Krakowiak is suspected of vandalizing religious sites in Međugorje, specifically by setting fire to the outdoor altar of St. James Church, defacing statues of the Virgin Mary with black paint, and writing offensive messages.

Krakowiak's current one-month detention is set to expire this Friday. The prosecution cited the risk of flight and the possibility of him repeating the offenses as reasons for the extension. He faces charges under the Criminal Code of Bosnia and Herzegovina for the destruction of religious objects, inciting ethnic, racial, or religious hatred, and causing public danger.

During court proceedings, Krakowiak admitted to the acts but stated he would do them again. His defense attorney has contested the claim that the actions were motivated by hatred. Krakowiak had previously gained attention in 2017 for walking from Warsaw to Međugorje, a journey he described as a spiritual turning point.
