Mexican activist Ana Jimena Hernández returns after Gaza flotilla blocked

Ana Jimena Hernández, a member of the Doctors to Gaza collective, arrived at Mexico City International Airport on Turkish Airlines flight TK181 from Istanbul after being unable to join the Global Sumud humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza. The activist explained that a mechanical failure – a rope tangled in the boat’s motor – forced Turkish coast‑guard assistance and prevented the vessel from continuing its mission.

She said the flotilla’s goal was to deliver medical supplies, equipment and personnel to health workers in Gaza, noting, “La idea de la misión médica era poder llevar insumos médicos, equipo especializado y personal que pudiera apoyar en campo a los trabajadores de la salud que se encuentran allá en Gaza”. Hernández also voiced concern over the death penalty imposed on Palestinian political prisoners.

The flotilla, which set sail from southern Turkey, was intercepted by Israeli forces starting on 18 May. Israeli vessels seized about 428 people from roughly 39 countries, including three Mexican delegates, accusing them of terrorism despite evidence that the ships carried school supplies, clothing, medication and food. Hernández reported that the Mexican delegates detained on the vessel Venus were later released.

The activist’s return highlights the ongoing humanitarian blockade of Gaza and the international response to Israeli interdictions of aid convoys.
