Mexican Army deploys 600 troops to Guanajuato

The Mexican Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) has deployed approximately 600 military personnel to the state of Guanajuato to bolster security operations. The troops, including members of the 84th Infantry Battalion, are being transferred to the 16th Military Zone in León and the XII Military Region in Irapuato.

The deployment aims to dismantle criminal organizations by targeting their leaders and other generators of violence through patrols, land reconnaissance, and deterrent measures. This action follows a period of significant violence in the state; reports indicate Guanajuato recorded high homicide rates in August, ranking as the second state with the most homicides in the country.

Security efforts are focused on the conurbated areas of León and Irapuato, where territorial disputes between criminal groups, specifically the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel (CSRL), are concentrated. These groups are reportedly fighting for control over drug trafficking, extortion, and other criminal economies in the industrial corridor and the Huachicol Triangle.
