Mexico authorities issue safety warnings regarding pyrotechnics

Health and security authorities across various Mexican states are issuing urgent warnings to avoid the use of pyrotechnics during Independence Day celebrations to prevent serious injuries and fatalities.

In Morelos, the Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection has guaranteed security conditions for festivities across 36 municipalities but strongly urges citizens to avoid firing weapons into the air and using fireworks. Authorities have also activated a crisis room to monitor incidents and advised against excessive alcohol consumption.

Health institutions, including ISSSTE and the Guanajuato Health Secretariat, emphasized that fireworks are explosives rather than toys. They warned of risks such as severe burns, loss of limbs, hearing damage, and permanent disabilities. ISSSTE specifically cautioned against carrying fireworks in pockets due to friction risks and advised against applying home remedies to burns, recommending immediate emergency medical attention instead.

In the State of Mexico, the Institute Mexiquense de la Pirotecnia (IMEPI) provided guidelines distinguishing between professional pyrotechnics and public sales products. For professional displays, spectators are advised to maintain a minimum distance of 50 meters and wear cotton clothing. Authorities reminded organizers to ensure all pyrotechnicians hold valid permits from the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA).
