Mexican bishops deliver disappearance report to Pope Leo XIV

Mexican bishops, led by Ramón Castro Castro, president of the Mexican Episcopal Conference (CEM), have delivered a 208-page document titled ‘The Faces and Names of Forced Disappearance in Mexico’ to Pope Leo XIV. The volume, produced by the National Dialogue for Peace, contains names, photographs, dates, and locations of disappeared individuals to highlight the ongoing crisis in the country.

The document aims to provide a human face to the official figures of more than 132,000 missing persons. It includes specific records of individuals such as Elías Macías Galván and Héctor Hugo Camaño Alvarado, alongside brief accounts of their lives.

The CEM intends to present this material to the United Nations and other international institutions to prompt action regarding the forensic crisis, impunity, and the dismantling of agencies responsible for reliable record-keeping. The initiative is a collaborative effort involving the CEM, the Episcopal Dimension for the Laity, the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious in Mexico (CIRM), and the Jesuits of Mexico.
