Mexico prepares to resume cattle exports to United States
Mexico is set to restart the export of live cattle to the United States in a phased manner beginning in August. The first shipments are expected to leave through the Sonora quarantine stations, as the state has been declared free of the cattle borer (gusano barrenador). The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will assess each Mexican state individually for sanitary risk before authorising further openings, with Chihuahua and Tamaulipas pending further evaluation because they report active borer cases.
The border closure had cost the Mexican cattle sector more than $2 billion in lost export revenue and drove domestic beef prices down. Industry leaders, including the head of the National Agricultural Council and the president of the Chihuahua livestock association, say that resuming exports should lift prices and help producers recover. Preparations include installing electronic identification chips and using detection dogs at the Sonora crossing, while regional groups stress the need for proper animal traceability to prevent un‑identified cattle from entering the market.
Overall, the gradual reopening aims to restore market access, improve price levels for ranchers, and ensure that health safeguards meet USDA requirements before each state is cleared.
