Mexican cities begin urban tree inventories

The municipality of Querétaro, Mexico, will start an inventory of its urban trees in September, beginning in the historic centre and later expanding to the Felipe Carrillo Puerto and Félix Osores districts. The assessment, carried out by a specialized firm, will evaluate the phytosanitary condition, vegetation coverage and maintenance needs of the trees. The city aims to use the data to set conservation priorities, improve environmental strategies and address a previously estimated deficit of about 177,000 trees. In 2025, 20,830 trees were planted; 39,200 are planned for this year, with a target of 70,000 trees by the end of 2026.

In the municipality of Ahome, Los Mochis, officials will inventory roughly 200 alamo trees along Antonio Rosales Boulevard and the Los Mochis‑Topolobampo highway. The survey will determine which trees are safe and which require pruning to prevent falling branches from endangering people or vehicles. The department also reminded developers that any trees removed for construction must be replaced, with penalties applied for non‑compliance.
