Overview

Municipal tree initiatives continue across Latin America. In Mexico City, the Secretariat of the Environment (SEDEMA) organized three volunteer "tequios" at the Cerro de la Estrella protected area, planting 1,394 native trees and adding fire‑prevention patrols, soil‑conservation work, biodiversity monitoring and environmental‑education with the Autonomous University of Mexico City and local collectives.

Saltillo reported the removal of two rain‑fell trees in Alameda Zaragoza and near Boulevard Francisco Coss and confirmed plans to plant four evergreen oak trees as part of its broader reforestation effort supported by state, federal, private and civil‑society partners.

In July 2026, Querétaro municipality began a city‑wide urban tree inventory, starting in the historic centre and expanding to other districts, to assess tree health, set conservation priorities and meet a target of 70,000 trees by the end of 2026 after planting 20,830 in 2025. Simultaneously, Ahome (Los Mochis) launched an inventory of roughly 200 alamo trees along key boulevards, focusing on safety pruning and enforcing replacement requirements for trees removed during construction.

These actions build on earlier efforts in Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and other Mexican cities, reflecting a regional emphasis on planting, maintenance, removal oversight and data‑driven management of urban forests.
