Mexican cities report progress in municipal reforestation programs

Municipalities in Nuevo Laredo and Cancún have reported significant milestones in their respective urban reforestation initiatives.

In Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, the ‘Arboleando NLD’ program has surpassed 5,000 trees planted during the current 2024-2027 administration. Recent efforts between September and mid-October 2026 added 464 trees to the total. The program focuses on planting native species such as mesquite, anacahuita, and oak to ensure better adaptation to local climate conditions and water availability.

In Cancún, Quintana Roo, the ‘Arboriza Cancún’ program has reached 3,600 trees planted as it enters the midpoint of its third reforestation phase. The initiative aims to plant an additional 2,500 trees by the end of December, utilizing the rainy season to support growth. Efforts are concentrated on major avenues and parks, including areas that suffered significant tree loss following tropical cyclones in 2020.
