Mexican communities block highway, protest landfill over infrastructure neglect

Residents of the San Miguel Balderas community in Tenango del Valle, State of Mexico, blocked the Tenango‑Ixtapan highway for several hours on Sunday, demanding repairs and rehabilitation of deteriorated roads. Protesters used trucks to dump earth onto the road, halting traffic in both directions. State and municipal security forces secured the area and opened a dialogue with the demonstrators, allowing the highway to reopen after about eight hours.

In the neighboring state of Hidalgo, inhabitants from several municipalities organized a caravan to oppose a proposed regional sanitary landfill in Teocalco, Tula de Allende. Led by the Movement Ciudadanos en Defensa del Manantial Siete Mezquites, they warned that the project threatens local springs that supply water to thousands and could cause contamination. The protesters vowed to continue their actions and called for an informational assembly to discuss the landfill’s cancellation.
