Mexico transport accidents and disruptions

Overview

Road blockades and transport disruptions persisted through August 2026. In July, protests and accidents frequently impacted major routes. In Oaxaca, traffic reordering in the historic centre drew mixed reactions, with merchants welcoming the changes while foreign-registered taxi drivers protested the restrictions. On July 8, taxi drivers blocked Avenida Paseo Tollocan in Toluca, and trans activists disrupted Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City. That same day, parents and teachers blocked the Mexico-Puebla toll road following a police raid, and a fatal double-vehicle crash closed the Mexico-Cuernavaca highway near Huitzilac.

Other July disruptions included an LGBT Pride march in Jiutepec, a cargo train derailment on the Interoceanic Corridor in Oaxaca, and a protest by San Pedro Tultepec residents on the Paseo Tollocan highway to protect the Laguna de Chimaliapan. Additionally, a toll-collection malfunction caused significant delays on the Saltillo-Torreón highway, and multiple collisions occurred on the Tehuacán-Oaxaca toll highway and in Oaxaca state.

In late July and early August, infrastructure neglect fueled renewed blockades. Residents of Santa Cruz Pueblo Nuevo and San Miguel Balderas in Tenango del Valle repeatedly blocked the Tenango-Ixtapan highway by dumping earth to demand road repairs. By late August, these blockades on the Toluca-Tenango highway and Libramiento Lerma Tres Marías had persisted for three days following failed dialogues, significantly impacting regional transit and local economies.
