Morena's internal coordination race prompts unity calls in Mexico

Morena is carrying out internal elections in several states to choose coordinators for the Defence of the Transformation and National Sovereignty. In Tamaulipas, local deputy Katalyna Méndez Cepeda said she will request a leave of absence if the party selects her, noting that registration for federal deputations begins in August. In Baja California, aspirant Alfredo Álvarez Cárdenas urged fellow candidates to prioritize unity and territorial work, emphasizing direct contact with citizens across the state’s municipalities.

In Sonora, Senator Heriberto Aguilar Castillo and Javier Lamarque stressed that internal cohesion and loyalty to the movement’s core principles are essential to sustain Governor Alfonso Durazo’s transformation projects. The same sentiment was echoed by national leaders, linking local coordination to President‑elect Claudia Sheinbaum’s broader agenda. In Guerrero, Green Party senator Karen Castrejón Trujillo announced her intent to run for the coordination role, acknowledging Morena’s decisive influence in the selection process while highlighting her two‑decade record of public service.

Amid these internal contests, President‑elect Sheinbaum accused the opposition PAN of seeking a return to neoliberal policies, adding a wider partisan dimension to the party’s internal dynamics.
